ORPHANAGE, HIMACHAL PREDESH - INDIA

In December 2006 John Shepherd Field Director for Global Compassion visited Himachal Pradesh in north India in the foothills of the Himalayas. During his time there he visited a small independent orphanage perched high up on a hillside. There are about 30 orphaned or abandoned children in the home. The building is a rented property with 8 or 9 rooms plus kitchen and wash rooms. The building was in a very poor decorative condition. With little or no heating and being located high up in foothills of the Himalayas it gets very cold at night in the winter. The beds at the home were very basic with few warm blankets for the children.

In August 2007, a team of workers visited the orphanage with the aim of brightening up the home. They made a good start of painting the home throughout. The redecoration of the orphanage was finished by the very dedicated local staff. The home now looks much brighter and more welcoming for the children.

In 2008, Global Compassion gave a grant for the purchase of new beds and blankets for the children and made a contribution to the running costs of the home. The home needs ongoing support for the day to day running costs and Global Compassion will consider further grants as and when funds are available.
