HAITI EARTHQUAKE
On Tuesday 12 January 2010 at 16:53 local time an earthquake - with a magnitude of 7.0 - struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. Estimates of the number of people killed in the disaster are now over 200,000 with the epicenter of the quake being close to the densely populated capital, Port-au-Prince. With homes, businesses, government buildings and infrastructure damaged, recovery is likely to be a long process for what was already the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.

How Global Compassion is helping
Global Compassion, together with its partner organization, which was operating in Haiti prior to the quake, is currently focusing their relief effort on the people of the island of La Gonave. The island lies just off the coast and was devastated by the disaster.

Recent report from the area:
“Our Haitian people on the ground have informed us that our location was devastated by the earthquake. Our school, walls & roof, is severely broken, our water cisterns & wells are unusable, our solar panels for power are broken, the houses on our campus are broken & unstable, and many people's homes are totally destroyed. Over 200 people from the community slept on our school campus under make shift tents (tarps & sticks) on Wednesday and Thursday night. There is little to no food, very little drinking water, no power or electricity (only power came from generator & solar panels even prior to storm), and very little hope with many of the people”..
